Staff / 10-26-2021
MANASSAS, VA. (PRWEB) OCTOBER 26, 2021
According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women comprise just 10.9 percent of the construction industry workforce. Determined to change that, Tibbs Paving is encouraging women to seek career opportunities in the paving industry.
After a year of remote learning during the pandemic, school children are back in the classroom. As a result, millions of women are ready to re-enter the workforce and pursue new career paths. While women comprise just 10.9 percent of the construction industry workforce, Virginia-based Tibbs Paving is determined to change that. Citing career opportunities and advancement, the company is paving the way to get more women in the paving industry.
The paving industry may not be top of mind when women search for job openings. Offering good pay and room for advancement, there are opportunities in the office and the field for women and men. Women make valuable contributions to the industry, bringing balance and experience to the workforce. To encourage women to apply their skills to the paving business, Tibbs Paving would like to introduce you to two of their Women in Asphalt.
Joanna Spanos, Financial Controller
As Financial Controller of Tibbs Paving, Joanna Spanos oversees Accounting, Human Resources and Office departments. With a B.A. degree in Economics, a background in finance and construction, Joanna took a ten-year pause in her career to raise her two sons. In 2019, she was ready to re-enter the workforce when she read a job posting for an Accounts Payable Specialist position at Tibbs. In 2020, she became Financial Controller for the company. She enjoys being a working mom and Tibbs supports the flexibility for a good work life balance. As her career has advanced, she joined the Women of Asphalt organization to become part of the sisterhood and encourage more women into joining the industry.
“The paving industry always has a demand for workers. It is a challenging and rewarding field for women to be part of.” – Joanna Spanos, Financial Controller – Tibbs Paving
Kiara Tibbs, Billing Specialist
Kiara Tibbs grew up in her family’s paving business. As a teenager, she was excited to help in the office, answering phones and typing up proposals. In school, Kiara studied Early Childhood Education. She was working at the daycare center that her one-year-old son attended when she decided to take a different career path. She returned to her roots, becoming a Tibbs Paving employee in 2011. For the last decade, she has enjoyed learning all aspects of the business. Whether it’s the materials needed to complete a job, to the close collaboration of the teams that make it a success. As Billing Specialist, she invoices customers, handles Accounts Receivable and supports every department within the company. Now, Kiara’s son is 11 and he enjoys coming to work with her to help around the office. The family tradition continues.
“Tibbs Paving makes women feel welcome. The company acknowledges women for their work ethics. They also take into consideration that many women are working moms.” – Kiara Tibbs, Billing Specialist – Tibbs Paving.
The paving industry benefits from the skills, perspective and experience that women bring to the workforce. There has never been a better time to be a Woman in Asphalt. For more than 25 years, Tibbs Paving has been helping their commercial, education and municipal clients manage their paved assets.
